Gary Alexander has never worked a day in his life…At least according to the edict of Confucius who said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Gary, a resident of Heritage Pointe senior living community in Warren, Indiana, is a registered architect who has had an expansive career. He is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) and an Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines Specialist.

“I have been blessed to be able to work in a profession (architecture) that I enjoy so much that it does not feel like work to me” Gary said. During his career, he was involved with many diverse projects in various settings, including colleges and universities, K-12 schools, hospitals, medical offices, religious buildings, courthouses, and more. He worked on international projects, including two mosques in Saudi Arabia. Gary said one of his favorite projects was overseeing the design and construction of Indiana Wesleyan University’s 3,800-seat chapel/auditorium.

Gary and his wife Linda moved to Heritage Pointe of Warren almost two years ago, and they are enjoying their new home. “We’ve made great friends,” he said. “And you can participate in as much or as little as you want, but the more you participate, the more you get out of living here. It’s great.” Gary is an avid bicyclist (when weather permits) and uses many of the amenities at the senior living community, including the indoor pool, fitness area, dining venues, and more. He is also a member of the Towne Homes and Villas Board.

Greatly enjoying volunteer work, Gary also helps out at various events at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

Shortly after moving, Alexander offered his construction knowledge and experience to assist at Heritage Pointe of Warren if needed. He has been a valuable resource, lending his expertise regarding campus projects. “I can’t serve officially as an architect because of my retired status, but I can provide input as an architect, a handicap accessibility specialist and as a LEED accredited professional,” he said. Gary added that he enjoys consulting with the Heritage Pointe of Warren team.

“Our residents have so many diverse and impressive backgrounds,” said Chod Boxell, CEO of United Methodist Memorial Home (UMMH) which owns and operates Heritage Pointe of Warren. “We love that they’re so involved with and help shape their home.”
