A new summer tradition is bringing generations together at Heritage Pointe of Warren.

The early learning center, which is on-site at the senior living community, recently launched its first Summer Book Club, an intergenerational program that pairs the school age children with residents at Heritage Pointe for weekly reading, conversation, and creative activities.

The early learning center serves children of Heritage Pointe employees as well as families from throughout the Warren area. Each Monday during the summer, children visit the residents and are matched with a reading partner for a special shared experience centered around books and connection.

Every week features a different theme designed to encourage discussion and relationship building. The first session focused on friendship. Children read a story about friendship with their resident partners, created bookmarks together, discussed questions such as “What makes a good friend?” and enjoyed a snack together.

To make the experience even more memorable, each child received a book bag, a sticker, and a prize from the treasure chest to take home.

Additional themes include animals and pets, helpers and heroes, and summer time adventures along with other topics that inspire storytelling, learning, and conversation.

The joy in the room is impossible to miss. Residents love spending time with the children, and the kids are excited to share stories and activities with their new friends. It is a wonderful reminder that meaningful connections can happen at any age.”

The Summer Book Club is designed to foster relationships between generations while promoting literacy, creativity, and social engagement. For residents, the program offers opportunities to share life experiences and build new friendships. For children, it provides meaningful interactions with older adults and valuable lessons about empathy, communication, and community.

As the program continues throughout the summer, Heritage Pointe looks forward to creating even more memorable moments through the simple but powerful act of reading together.
