The only thing better than a little bit of greenery during the summer is a lot of greenery during the summer, and Heritage Pointe of Huntington senior living community has taken it to the max.

Well aware of the beauty, pure pleasure, and many benefits provided by gardening, Brad Fuller, activity director for Heritage Pointe of Huntington, has made sure there are abundant ways for the residents to nurture their green thumbs. “We like to provide opportunities for what the residents have enjoyed in their pasts, as well as hobbies they might newly discover now that they have the time in retirement,” he said.

The assisted living area of Heritage Pointe of Huntington boasts sun porches. “The residents love to tend the gardens, and the raised beds make it easier,” Brad said. “They grow flowers and tomatoes that they pick and enjoy and share with others.”

There are also garden areas in memory care at Heritage Pointe, with hanging baskets. “The memory care residents are out daily to do something in the garden. It often brings back lovely memories for them,” Brad said, adding that weather-permitting, the residents in Memory Lane spend time amongst the gardens, doing seated exercises, listening to music, playing games, and reminiscing, all while wearing stylish yet very protective straw hats.

A local Eagle Scout built raised garden beds in the health care courtyards last summer, making it easier for the residents to care for plants.

Everywhere you look, there are gardens, flowers, and vegetables. “It’s really beautiful, and the residents love it,” said Brad.
