How can older adults garden and do yard work safely without hurting their back?

Summer gardening and yard work are excellent ways for older adults to stay active, improve flexibility, and enjoy the outdoors. However, repetitive bending, lifting, and twisting can increase the risk of back pain, muscle strain, and joint injuries. Using proper body mechanics—such as bending at the knees, avoiding twisting while lifting, taking frequent breaks, and using ergonomic gardening tools—can help you stay safe while continuing to enjoy your favorite outdoor activities.

If you experience persistent pain, stiffness, or difficulty moving after yard work, a physical therapist can assess your movement and recommend exercises and techniques to help you recover and prevent future injuries.
