He keeps coming back.

Gene Fahlsing, is a frequent and welcome guest at Heritage Pointe of Fort Wayne senior living community. There, he visits with the residents, helps out with activities, and plays pool three to five days per week. “Heritage Pointe,” he said, “Is ‘outstanding. I’ve visited different senior living communities, and nothing compares.”

Fahlsing’s wife, Donna, was a resident in health care at Heritage Pointe for several years, passing away after a long battle with Parkinson’s in 2023. “The staff did a wonderful job taking care of her,” said Fahlsing. “Everyone is very friendly. Friendly and just like family.”

Fahlsing explained how he’s drawn to returning to the community. “I like to encourage people, so I visit with a lot of residents and to staff, too. God gave me this talent to encourage people, and that’s what I like to do. If people are down when I arrive, they’re happy after I spend time with them. That makes me feel good.”  Describing himself, Fahlsing said, “I used to be laid back in high school. Now, I’m outgoing. I love Jesus as my savior and reflect him in my visits. But I don’t push religion.”

“Gene’s more than a volunteer who comes in, does service, and leaves. He’s developed relationships with the residents. It may have started with him wanting to ‘give back,’ but he’s developed relationships that are important to him too,” said Rod Craft, executive director of Heritage Pointe of Fort Wayne. “He is very welcome here; the residents enjoy his visits and he does too.”

“I recommend a lot of people to come in and learn about the community, It’s the best place to be,” Fahlsing said. “As long as God gives me the ability and I can physically do this, I’ll keep coming here to visit.”
